ANNUAL REPORT 2011-12

The activities of Varnasala was begun with the General Body Meeting held on 20th July 2011 which followed the Membership Campaign. More than 60 talented students were registered as members. Vinayak Venugopal, I CE and Aby Benz, I PV was elected as Student Co-ordinators. The second general body meeting was held on 6th October 2011.
The formal inauguration of the activities was done by famous artist and writer Prof. Ajay S. Sekher (Assistant Professor, Department of English, Govt. College, Thrissur) held on 23rd September 2011. The inaugural ceremony was organized along with a seminar on ‘Contemporary art and culture’ led by Prof. Ajay. He inaugurated the activities by drawing a picture entitled ‘Christ-Budha’ which was a combination of the images of these two historical personalities. An exhibition of drawings of the Varnasala members was also arranged on the occasion. In the afternoon session, the Chief Guest had an engaging and active session of the interaction regarding art, art education and the politics and ethics of art in the complex and changing world.
Presidential address was delivered by Prof. N. Joy, Principal and Prof. E.V. Krishnan Namboothiri delivered the introductory speech. Dr. P.B. Sanish welcomed the gathering and Kum. Asha Johny proposed the vote of thanks. Sri. Cris Thomas felicitated.
An interaction with Padmashri G. Shankar, famous architect was organized in association with Folklore Club of the College on 23rd November 2011. The topic of the lecture was ‘Sustainable and eco-friendly housing’.
The College level competitions in Pencil Drawing was held on 9th February 2012 and Water Colour Painting on 10th February. In both the competitions Vysakh S. Mohan won first prize and Akshay Muraleedharan and Amal Dev T. won second prize respectively. Winners were given prizes on the Talent Day celebrations.
Vysakh S. Mohan won second prize in Cartoon competition in the M.G. University Youth Festival 2012 held at Thiruvalla. We extend our hearty congratulations to him.

Welcome to Padmashri G. Shankar!


Padmashri G. Shankar, the world renowned architect will visit our college on 23 November 2011 and will interact with us.
Shri.G.Shankar, Founder Chairman of Habitat Technology Group (The largest Non-Governmental Organization in the shelter sector in India, committed to Sustainable Building Solutions), has made path – breaking, original contributions in the field of housing and architecture, by spearheading a ‘people’s housing movement ‘ based on cost effective, sustainable and eco-friendly building technologies. For more than two decades, his interventions as a socially responsible architect have brought about a qualitative change in the social fabric of architecture. What distinguishes Shankar is his pioneering effort in pro poor housing with innovative affordable technologies. His creations are cheerful structures that merge visual beauty with sound principles for conservation of resources.
G. Shankar, was born on 29 May 1960 at Arusha in East Africa. Gopalan Nair Shankar is his full name. He advocates the use of locally available materials, sustainability, eco-friendliness and cost effectiveness. He founded the Habitat Technology Group, Thiruvananthapuram, in 1985, and is still the chief architect of the group as of 2007, and serves on a number of boards. He has also won the prize for the best architect in Kerala. His attitude to "green architecture" has gained him a reputation as the "people's architect". Shankar has been awarded the 2011 Padma Shri by Govt. of India.
